Center Fielder Alex Verdugo had managed to tie the score in the 8th inning and also hit the winning hit to bring the victory to the Red Sox.
Vergudo mentioned that "To keep fighting back and forth, it just felt like one of those games where it had to be us," Verdugo said. "Tonight's up there (for me), obviously, with how good the Yankees have been and the way the 10th inning went, getting down two runs."
With runners on second and third and two strong outs, Verdugo took a deep breath and saw the ball at the perfect angle to make it past center-left and help Rob Refsnyder and Jeter Downs.
After the win, Jeter Downs said that "I'm pretty numb right now, like an hour before the game they told me they were scratching because there was a chance (I could be called up)."
Verdugo also commented on his teammate's actions
"I hit it and I knew the first run was in and I was 'all right' and I saw them waving the second one. I was like: 'Let's go, let's go,'" said the centerfielder, who celebrated with his team "I was trying to give them a little bit of a chase and not be too easy to catch."
This win puts the Boston Red Sox closer to the Yankees who are leading the American League West 61 games to 46 of the Red Sox.
