“The French are true romantics. They feel the only difference between a man of forty and one of seventy is thirty years of experience.” – Maurice Chevalier

While Mr. Chevalier may or may not be accurate in his assessment of female differences in a thirty-year span, it is nonetheless thought-provoking. It is an inevitable fact that time brings about experience. When we’re born, we see the light for the first time; when we first begin learning, our minds begin evolving; when we arrive at mid-life, we begin to appreciate its finite nature…and on, and on.

However, we – at times, tongue-in-cheek – say that this milestone brings about, at the least, a common set of experiences shared by woman that reach age 40.

I'm a 30-year-old woman and my dad has just told me to clean my room.

It's slightly humiliating, but not entirely surprising. For the past month, I've been at my childhood home in New Zealand on coronavirus lockdown -- and it appears I'll be living with my parents for the foreseeable future.

Until recently, I lived in my own apartment in Hong Kong with a spirited cat and a large collection of potted plants. My interests included heading to the beach or grabbing a drink in a pub.

Now, my hobbies are a bit different. Last weekend, I made five different types of bread. This weekend, we have grand plans to go on a walk.

My husband and I started couples counselling at the end of February, when coronavirus had yet to be detected in the US. Becoming parents had tested our relationship, and recent challenges in particular - including the arrival of our second baby this past December - had made existing tensions worse. We wanted to communicate better, to treat one another more lovingly and bicker less often, particularly in front of our two year old son, who - much to my heartbreak - had begun acting out when the two of us would start fighting.

If you are a toddler parent, you are almost always caught in the whirlwind of the range of emotions that he exhibits. From being a ray of sunshine one minute, and suffering a huge meltdown the next, you must have seen it all by now. But these mood changes can be concerning when your child refuses your attention or your bear hug. Well, before jumping to any conclusion, remember there are multiple reasons why your little one could be behaving like that.
