International Labour Day, also known as May Day, is a global celebration dedicated to honoring the contributions of workers and commemorating the achievements of the labor movement. Observed on May 1st each year, this day serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for workers's; rights, fair wages, and improved working conditions around the world.
Originating from the labor union movements of the late 19th century, International Labour Day has a rich history rooted in the fight for social justice and equality. The date was chosen to commemorate the Haymarket affair, a pivotal event that took place in Chicago in 1886, where workers gathered to demand an eight-hour workday. The peaceful protest turned violent when a bomb was thrown, resulting in the deaths of several demonstrators and police officers.
Despite the tragedy, the Haymarket affair galvanized the labor movement and inspired widespread protests and strikes in support
of workers' rights. Today, International Labour Day is celebrated in countries across the globe with various events, demonstrations, and marches. It serves as an opportunity to reflect on the progress that has been made in advancing workers' rights and to highlight the
challenges that still exist.
One of the key themes of International Labour Day is the fight against inequality and exploitation in the workplace. Workers continue to face issues such as low wages, unsafe working conditions, and lack of job security, particularly in industries such as manufacturing, agriculture, and service sectors.
