During a recent interview with DAZED magazine, the well known RnB and Grammy award winning singer, SZA opens up on how she feels confined to RnB and she does not like how labels put artists in a box. This is because SZA’s music is diverse but she is only known as an RnB artist.

She tells DAZED that the only reason she is confined to RnB is because she’s black. She said that being confined in one genre doesn’t allow space to be anything or try something new. She said, “Justin Bieber is not considered an RnB artist: he is a popular artist who makes RnB, folk music or whatever his heart desires.” She said that she wants to be allowed the same opportunity to make any type of music she wants without a label being attached to it and without it being based on her skin colour.

“At the same time, it’s nothing to get bent out of shape about, because it’s just about people processing you. As long as l don’t process myself that way. I don’t necessarily box myself into anything. I’m trying to make music, trying to vibe out and enjoy the experience.”

SZA’s comments shocked fans because she has won and collected so many accolades in the RnB category. Responding to a fan on Instagram who asked her what other category she wants to be assigned to, she wrote, “I just wanna be free to create anything! You can look at songs like: Julia, Kill Bill, f2f, nobody gets me, ghost in the machine, shattered ring and my entire first two projects before Z, none of those are RnB.” She stated that it is okay to be more than one thing.
