British actor Bernard Hill, best known for his memorable roles in iconic films such as "Titanic" and "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, has passed away at the age of 79, his family announced on Sunday. "It is with the greatest sadness that we must announce that Bernard Hill, renowned actor known for his roles in ‘Titanic’ and ‘Lord of the Rings,’ passed away in the early hours of this morning at the age of 79,"the statement read". "He was with his fiancée Alison and his son Gabriel."

The actor rose to prominence in his native England with his role in the acclaimed 1982 drama "Boys from the Blackstuff", which poignantly depicted the struggles of unemployed men during the Thatcher era. However, it was his nuanced portrayals in supporting roles that earned him widespread recognition and admiration from audiences worldwide.

In James Cameron's epic 1997 film "Titanic", Hill delivered a memorable performance as Captain Edward Smith, infusing the character with a sense of gravitas and vulnerability as the doomed ship's commander.
