American former tennis player Martina Navratilova, winner of 18 majors, has announced that she has overcome her throat and breast cancer via Twitter account.

"After a day full of tests at Sloan Kettering, I got the all clear! Thank you to all the doctors, nurses, proton and radiation magicians etc- what a relief:)

#byebyecancer :) and yes, #fuckcancer !!!," Navratilova wrote on her Twitter account.

The 66-year-old Czech-born Navratilova announced on January 2 this year that she was suffering from throat and breast cancer, but both were at a "curable" stage.

"This double whammy is serious, but still curable. I hope it goes well. It's going to be a pain for a while, but I'm going to fight with everything I've got," Navratilova said at the time.

The legendary player, who has 59 majors to her name between singles, doubles and mixed doubles, found out she had a lymph node in her neck at the WTA Finals in Fort Worth (Texas) in 2022, and the tests she underwent detected throat cancer and breast cancer, both in the early stages of development.

She announced in March that her cancer was in remission. In an interview with TalkTV, she said that doctors told her she was almost cancer-free and recalled her thoughts when she was first diagnosed with the disease: "I was in a total panic for three days thinking I might not see Christmas next year. The wish list of all the things I wanted to do came to mind. And this may sound very shallow, but I was like, okay, 'what amazing car do I want to drive if I live for a year?'"

Navratilova had already had breast cancer in 2010. She underwent treatments in New York. Recognised as one of the legends of world sport in the 20th century, Navratilova marked an era in tennis with 332 weeks at world number one in 1978 and 1987 and victories at all four Grand Slams: Australia, Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open.
