Emmitt Smith, the legendary Dallas Cowboys running back, expressed his deep dissatisfaction with the team's performance heading into the 2024 offseason. Despite his 15-year Hall of Fame career with the franchise, during which he helped secure three Lombardi Trophies, Smith is disheartened by the team's failure to meet expectations.
In a candid interview on "PFT Live," Smith voiced his frustration: "I'm tired of being sold on what the Cowboys could be." He reflected on the team's disappointing one-and-done playoff exit, despite finishing with a 12-5 record, and emphasized his desire to focus on what the Cowboys truly are. He expressed disappointment in the team's inability to reach a conference championship appearance since 1995, questioning: "How do you allow this to happen?"
Smith also expressed surprise at the decision to retain head coach Mike McCarthy following the playoff disappointment. He emphasized that the team's performance in 2023 did not align with the esteemed reputation and brand of the Dallas Cowboys. According to Smith, there has been a lack of respect for years within the organization.
The all-time rush yards leader criticized today's players: "Nobody wants to fight no more... They wanna (say), 'Oh, we are the Cowboys. Tell me how good I am.' Without doing anything." He highlighted the tendency for players to seek validation through social media and other platforms without backing it up with on-field performance. Smith stressed the importance of establishing a current legacy rather than solely relying on past achievements.
Smith criticized Jones' credibility
Smith also expressed his concerns about the team's owner, Jerry Jones, suggesting that Jones is losing credibility and respect. He emphasized the impact of losing credibility on maintaining honor within the organization. Smith's disappointment was palpable as he lamented feeling responsible for the team's struggles and expressed a desire to have contributed to a better outcome.
