Spencer Matthews has revealed how, prior to making the abrupt decision to become sober, alcohol took control of his life and threatened to destroy his relationship.

The TV personality's drinking habit grew ingrained in his life throughout his time working as a city broker in London and during his time on Made in Chelsea.

However, alcohol became a problem for him when he married Vogue Williams in his late twenties after meeting her.

Spencer, who is now a father of three, admitted to losing his relationship with Vogue after continuing to drink. He recalled their highly social and boozy relationship after meeting on the reality show The Jump. Spencer was heavily dependent on alcohol at the time, and the couple became parents of three. Despite going sober for 10 days before the finals, he only went and won. When he won, he went on a mental bender, losing everything and feeling like a mess. This was unusual for Spencer, who was now a parent of three.

Despite Vogue's tendency to "binge drink every few days and drink to get drunk," Spencer clarified that he would continue to "and it was every day."

I can tell she's a bit of a binge drinker, and she won't mind. She detests drinking in general and finds hangovers to be unbearable. Despite not enjoying the taste of alcohol, she will drink to become inebriated. Every few days back then, she would drink herself into inebriation. Regarding Vogue's drinking habits, Spencer clarified that it's now a once-a-month kind of thing.

Spencer, a former model, revealed that he would drink on days off, while his wife wouldn't. He continued to drink daily, drawing attention to it. Around this time, Vogue fell pregnant with their eldest son, Theodore. Spencer felt disappointed in her for not drinking, which he wanted people close to him to be proud of. This situation highlights the importance of maintaining a healthy relationship.

After the jump, Spencer struggled to find work while his wife's career flourished. He felt like a loser as she traveled, landed TV jobs, and presented documentaries while he was at home. His turning point occurred in 2017 after drinking most of a bottle of whiskey at his London home with Vogue.

He recalls telling Vogue he was going to quit when they were getting into bed together while intoxicated. He acknowledged, "I didn't drink for three and a half years; I just stopped," but "she didn't really believe me, and neither did anybody else."

The following morning, he registered for his first ultra-marathon, which involved running six and a half miles in five days across the Sahara Desert, only to further symbolize his turning moment. "I did it to punish myself for the years wasted," the speaker said.

Spencer, founder of The Clean Liquor Company, plans to set a world record by running thirty consecutive marathons in thirty days in the Joranian desert, marking the first time he has done so.
