Fernando Mendoza has opened up about his conversation with Tom Brady ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft, offering insight into the expectations that could await him if he joins the Las Vegas Raiders.
Speaking on The Dan Patrick Show, Mendoza said he met Brady during an official pre draft visit with the Raiders. The 22 year old quarterback, widely projected to be the first overall pick, described the meeting as a valuable experience. He shared that Brady made it clear he would take a demanding approach as a mentor rather than offering constant reassurance. Mendoza said Brady emphasized that he intends to push him to improve and grow.
Brady, who is a minority owner of the Raiders, also told Mendoza that he is committed to supporting whichever quarterback the team selects. Mendoza noted that this mentorship would extend beyond him if the team chooses another player. The young quarterback said he would welcome the opportunity to learn from someone with Brady's level of success and experience, adding that he sees similarities between their playing styles.
Mendoza also mentioned that he has studied the game of Kirk Cousins, who recently signed with the Raiders. He believes learning from both Brady and Cousins could help him develop further at the professional level.
As the draft approaches, Mendoza revealed he will not attend the event in person. Instead, he plans to watch from home with his family, particularly to be with his mother, who is living with multiple sclerosis. He explained that staying at home would make the experience more comfortable for his family and allow him to share the moment with a larger group of people who have supported his journey.
Mendoza said he wants to celebrate this milestone with those who have played a role in his development, including mentors, coaches, friends, and relatives. He believes this approach will create a more meaningful memory than attending the draft with a limited number of guests.
In a previous interview, Mendoza spoke about the impact his mother has had on his life and career. He described her as a source of constant encouragement and inspiration, noting that her optimism helps him stay focused each day. He also works with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in support of her condition.
