Capturing the cultural moment is always a delicate task, yet Pantone takes it on every year with its Color of the Year. For 2026 the Pantone Color Institute has chosen Cloud Dancer, a soft shade of white that it describes as calm, balanced and quietly expressive. According to the institute this choice reflects a collective desire for stillness and clarity in a world that feels increasingly fast and loud.
Cloud Dancer is presented as a billowy white touched with both cool and warm undertones. Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director of the institute, told CNN that the color offers a calming influence at a time when technology continues to shape and pressure the everyday experience. She explained that Cloud Dancer is about rediscovering the value of measured thought and quiet reflection. It is meant to reflect a yearning for a fresh beginning and a steadier emotional space.
Pantone has been naming a Color of the Year since 1999. The goal is not only to highlight trends but to capture how cultural and political forces show up through color. Laurie Pressman, the vice president of the institute, explained that everything the team studies passes through the lens of color language. The process is layered. The team tracks cultural signals, reviews fashion and design movements, studies shifts in behavior and then locks onto a color family before deciding on the exact shade. Even the name carries weight because the first reaction most people have to color is tied to the image the name creates.
