Manchester United Women advanced to their third consecutive FA Cup final with a commanding 2-0 win over rivals Manchester City at Joie Stadium, ending City's hopes of silverware this season.
United struck early, leading 2-0 at halftime thanks to goals from Celin Bizet and Grace Clinton. The team capitalized on City's weakened lineup, missing key players like Vivianne Miedema and Jill Roord due to injuries sustained during the international break. United's high pressing and direct play overwhelmed City in the first half. Jayde Riviere repeatedly found Bizet down the right wing, and Ella Toone's incisive pass allowed Bizet to open the scoring with a composed finish. Minutes later, Clinton headed in Gabby George's corner after drifting into the box unmarked.
Despite a spirited second-half response from City, including impressive efforts from Brazil's Kerolin, United's defence held firm. Goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce was instrumental, pulling off a stunning double save to deny Yui Hasegawa's free-kick and Lily Murphy's rebound. City, who had already fallen behind in the Women's Super League top-three race, struggled to mount a full comeback, especially after Mary Fowler's injury forced a reshuffle of their already stretched squad.
While City goalkeeper Khiara Keating kept the scoreline respectable by denying further goals from Bizet and Toone, United remained in control. Their defence, the most solid in the WSL this season, was resilient under pressure, led by Maya Le Tissier and Millie Turner.
United manager Marc Skinner praised his side's dominance and focus, highlighting the team's growth since their previous encounter with City earlier in the season. "I thought we were incredible," Skinner said. "There was none of the drop-off we had at the Etihad. It was pure control."
United will now face Chelsea in the final on May 18—a rematch of the 2023 final, where Chelsea edged them 1-0. For Grace Clinton, who missed last year's final while on loan at Tottenham, and her close friend Bizet, it's a shot at redemption and glory.
Meanwhile, City must regroup after a disappointing campaign. Interim boss Nick Cushing called for renewed focus and commitment, admitting, "We're in a position we shouldn't be in."
As City prepare for a summer rebuild, United push forward in pursuit of another trophy and Champions League qualification.
