Russell Brand has spoken openly about his past conduct, admitting he had a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old when he was 30 and describing aspects of his behaviour at the time as "exploitative."
During an appearance on The Megyn Kelly Show, Brand reflected on his actions while addressing ongoing scrutiny over historical allegations. "I did sleep with a 16-year-old when I was 30," he said, noting that the relationship was legal in the United Kingdom, where the age of consent is 16.
He added, "When I was 30, I was a very different person... an immature 30-year-old."
The comedian acknowledged the imbalance that existed in his relationships at the height of his fame. "Consensual sex with a lot of people, when there is a strong power differential... I think involves exploitation. I think it is exploitative," he said.
He further admitted, "I recognise that my sexual conduct in the past was selfish and I did not apply enough consideration... to how that sex was affecting other people."
Brand, now 50, is currently facing multiple charges in the UK, including rape, sexual assault and indecent assault, relating to incidents alleged to have taken place between 1999 and 2009.
He has denied all accusations and pleaded not guilty. A trial is scheduled to begin in October, where he will have the opportunity to respond to the claims in court.
In discussing his past, Brand maintained that his encounters were consensual but said fame and personal struggles influenced his behaviour.
"What fame gave me... was opportunity for endless consent, which led me to be a hedonist and a fool and an exploiter of women," he said, adding that this was something that "needs to be redeemed and addressed and atoned for."
He also described the legal process as difficult, calling it "very, very, very humbling and confronting," while reiterating that he has reflected on his past actions.
Brand first rose to prominence as a comedian and presenter, later transitioning into film roles and broadcasting. In recent years, he has shifted towards online commentary and spoken publicly about his personal transformation, including his faith.
