"I want to take a moment to remember someone very dear to us," Ora began, addressing the audience. She noted that Payne, who recently passed away, had been an integral part of the MTV community and a cherished friend. "He was a big part of the MTV world, my world, and I think a lot of yours at home and everyone here tonight," she said.
Having collaborated with Payne on their 2018 song "For You," Ora described the One Direction singer as "one of the kindest people" she'd known, saying, "Sometimes, simply speaking is enough." She recalled his generosity, his joy, and his ability to light up any room he entered, adding, "He left such a mark on this world."
Following Ora's words, the ceremony paid tribute to Payne with a video montage, captioned "MTV remembers Liam Payne 1993–2024," featuring black-and-white clips and the One Direction song "Night Changes."
Payne tragically died on Oct. 16 after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Authorities confirmed that he had alcohol, cocaine, and prescription antidepressants in his system.
Shortly after Payne's passing, Ora performed in Osaka, Japan, and tearfully sang "For You" in his memory. Struggling to finish, she asked the audience to sing along as Payne's photo appeared on a screen behind her. The following day, Ora shared a heartfelt post on Instagram, writing, "I'm devastated. He had the kindest soul. I loved working with him; he was such a joy on and off stage. This news breaks my heart."
She sent condolences to Payne's family and friends, expressing that their song "For You" held a new, profound meaning. "Rest in peace," she concluded.
