When Olivia Munn found out she was pregnant in 2021, her relationship with John Mulaney was still in its early, uncertain stages. As Munn recently revealed to GQ, the two "barely knew" each other at the time, with their connection being more physical than an established romance.
"It wasn't anything close to 'dating,'" the 44-year-old actress explained. "I barely knew him." Mulaney, 42, had split from his then-wife Anna Marie Tendler just months prior and was navigating his own recovery journey after a relapse during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite the unconventional circumstances, Mulaney was "excited" when Munn shared the news of her pregnancy. However, their initial plan was to co-parent their child, with Munn residing in Los Angeles while Mulaney remained in New York.
"It wasn't necessarily, 'We're going to be married and live together' or any of that, but it was, 'I will be involved in some way,'" Munn told the outlet.
Over the course of Munn's pregnancy, the two grew closer, with Mulaney's excitement over the impending arrival of their son, Malcolm, serving as a source of light during his recovery. "I remember he was really excited to tell his parents," Munn shared. "I was watching someone newly sober, at the edge of a cliff, and I didn't know him well enough to help him."
By the time Munn was six months pregnant, she decided to get involved in Mulaney's sobriety, staging a mini-intervention and agreeing to give him random drug tests, a practice they continue to this day.
Two months later, in September 2021, Mulaney publicly announced the pregnancy, telling Seth Meyers, "I'm gonna be a dad!" Malcolm was born that November, and in February 2022, Mulaney finalized his divorce from Tendler.
The couple's relationship continued to evolve, and in July 2024, Munn and Mulaney tied the knot. Just two months later, they welcomed their second child, a daughter named Méi, via surrogate.
