The Desperate Housewives actress explained that recent political events cemented her decision. Referring to Donald Trump's election, she said, "The shock wasn't just that he won; it's that someone with a criminal record and so much hatred could lead the country. If he follows through on his promises, it's going to be frightening." She also recalled the disappointment she felt after Trump's 2016 victory: "I'd never felt depressed before. It made me question, 'Does my vote even matter? Am I making a difference?' I always believed the best person wins, and then I realized that isn't always true."
Acknowledging her own privilege, Longoria noted, "I'm lucky to have the option to leave. Most Americans don't have that choice and are stuck in this increasingly dystopian country. My anxiety and sadness are for them."
Longoria now lives with her husband, José Bastón, and their six-year-old son, Santiago, in Mexico and Spain. She often travels for work throughout Europe and South America, but rarely returns to Los Angeles.
Looking ahead, Longoria spoke about her approaching 50th birthday, saying, "For me, age is just a number, but I'm looking forward to it. I refuse to believe my greatest achievements are behind me."
