The romance between Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton nearly ended happily. Although the couple, who got married in 2021 after first meeting in 2015 while serving as coaches on The Voice, may be together now, the singer of "Hollaback Girl" recently disclosed that she was about to become just a girl to the "Ol' Red" crooner.
"I was like, 'I can't even talk to you,'" Gwen said in an interview with Peoplein that was released on November 25. "This is crazy. I've got enough issues already. This is no longer the case. We won't text or do anything else."
The No Doubt frontwoman added that 2015 was a difficult year for the pair due to her and Blake's separate separations from Miranda Lambert and Gavin Rossdale at the time.
"It was chaos when we first met," she continued. "Everywhere we looked, our lives were in total chaos. At that point, nothing could save us.
Gwen, who has sons with Gavin, Apollo, 10, Zuma, 16, and Kingston, 18, explained that songwriting is what kept Blake going in spite of her initial reluctance.
"He doesn't really write songs as much as he used to," she added, "so I think he really wanted to impress me." I also enjoy writing songs. To me, that is everything. That is the source of my fulfillment.
In order to perform "Go Ahead and Break My Heart," a country duet that they ultimately released in 2016, Blake turned to Gwen for assistance.
"I received it from him, and it was a partially composed song," she remarked. His words were, 'Help me finish this.'" The second verse of the song is all over text, so I wrote it back to him. We wrote that song together for the first time. We were writing a song to each other even though we were never in the same room.
Additionally, Gwen saw Blake as an answer to her prayer rather than just a songwriting collaborator.
"Being married and experiencing the love that I witnessed my parents have and having children is something that I have desired since I was a young child," she said. That dream was a total failure. I had to come up with a new dream and figure out how to proceed after it was crushed.
She continued, "It was a miracle that God put Blake in my life."
