Disgraced Hollywood entertainer and producer, Harvey Weinstein, who was convicted of multiple charges including sexual assaults requests judges to move him out of Riker’s island. He told Judge Curtis Farber of Manhattan Supreme Court that he is dying of cancer and won’t make it to the April 15 trial date if he is forced to remain held at Rikers Island.
Weinstein, who was once a renowned Hollywood producer fell from grace when numerous victims accused him of rape. This led to the start of the “Me Too” movement. Weinstein’s alleged actions helped spur the Hollywood #MeToo movement with nearly 100 women accusing him of sexual misconduct. He was also convicted and facing a new charge from a woman claiming he forced her to give him oral sex in 2006.
“ I’m begging the court to move your date so we can have that date instead and proceed with this trial as quickly as we can and get our of this hell hole,” Weinstein said on Wednesday. It was revealed that Weinstein is currently suffering from terminal cancer.
“Every day, I’m at Rikers Island it’s a mystery to me how I’m still walking. I’m asking and begging you, your honor, I can’t hold on anymore I’m holding on because I want justice for myself and I want this to be over with,” he told the court while seated in a wheelchair.
He went ahead to plead with the judge to switch the case and do so with clemency since he “doesn’t know how much longer he can hold on.” He claimed that his condition at Rikers are only worsening his health issues. In May 2024, Weinstein attorney Donna Rotunno told The City: “He’s a sick man. Harvey has multiple health issues and he’s never gotten the level of care that he received prior to going into custody.”
