The parents of Brian Laundrie are being criticized once more. Following Netflix's release of American Murder: Gabby Petito, a comprehensive account of Gabby Petito's 2021 murder by her boyfriend, Brian's parents' lawyer offered insight into the documentary's retelling of events, stating that the Laundrie family "expected" the documentary's framing.

In an interview with The Sun, lawyer Steven Bertolino stated, "One perspective depicted as the 'truth' as seen through their lens." Every side thinks their viewpoint is right. With all the chaos and mistrust, it is difficult to see things from the other person's point of view.

However, the attorney stressed that there were no "contradictions" between what was described in the Netflix documentary, which was released on the streaming service on February 17, and Brian's parents, Chris and Roberta Laundrie.

Without going into detail, the lawyer went on, "The documentary contained many inaccuracies, incorrect juxtapositions of timelines, and misstatements and omissions of fact—perhaps deliberate to capture their 'truth,' perhaps due to simple error." "As everyone knows, Brian killed Gabby before killing himself."

"Let both Gabby's and Brian's parents grieve in peace," he continued.

In the meantime, Gabby's parents—father Joe Petito, stepmother Tara Petito, stepfather Jim Schmidt, and mother Nichole Schmidt—appeared in the documentary and discussed the details of their daughter's relationship with Brian before and after her murder.

In the summer of 2021, Gabby and Brian were traveling across the nation when Gabby's family suddenly stopped communicating with her in August. The following month, Gabby's family reported her missing when Brian came home alone to his Florida home. When the 22-year-old was discovered dead in September 2021, it was determined that she had been strangled to death. A month later, Brian—who had been named a person of interest in Gabby’s then-unsolved murder case—was found dead by suicide and left a note behind sharing that he had killed her.

Loretta Bush, an FBI Special Agent for the Tampa Division, stated in the documentary that after Brian vanished, they discovered a letter from his mother among his belongings that contained the words, "burn after reading."

Roberta's letter stated, "You are my boy, nothing can make me stop loving you." "No matter what we do, nothing will ever separate us. I'll bake a cake with a file inside if you're incarcerated. I'll come with a shovel and trash bags if you need to get rid of a body.
