Matt Damon and Ben Affleck recently shared candid thoughts about how streaming platforms are shaping modern filmmaking, especially when it comes to Netflix. The longtime friends and collaborators appeared on the Joe Rogan Experience to promote their upcoming Netflix film The Rip. During the conversation, they spoke openly about how audience viewing habits at home are influencing creative decisions behind the scenes.
According to Damon, Netflix operates on the assumption that people watch movies very differently at home than they do in a theater. In a living room setting, viewers are more likely to be distracted, often checking their phones or doing other things while a movie plays. Damon said this shift in attention has led to conversations about restructuring films to keep viewers engaged from the very beginning.
He explained that the traditional way of building an action movie used to follow a clear structure. There would usually be three major action set pieces, one in each act of the film. The biggest and most expensive sequence typically came at the end, serving as the climax. That approach was designed for audiences who were fully locked in, sitting in a dark theater with no distractions.
Now, Damon said, Netflix often pushes filmmakers to front load excitement. The platform wants a big action moment within the first few minutes to prevent viewers from clicking away. On top of that, Damon revealed that there are discussions about repeating key plot points several times through dialogue. The reasoning is simple. If viewers miss something while looking at their phones, the story will still make sense when it is restated later.
Damon shared this observation without judgment, framing it as a reflection of how viewing habits have changed. He made it clear that the platform is responding to data and audience behavior, not trying to undermine storytelling on purpose.
Ben Affleck jumped into the conversation to point out that this formula is not the only way to succeed on Netflix. He cited the recent limited series Adolescence as an example of a project that breaks many of these so called rules. The show does not rely on constant action or repeated exposition. Instead, it uses silence, long takes, and subtle performances to tell a dark and emotional story.
Affleck praised Adolescence for trusting its audience. He described scenes where characters sit in a car without speaking and moments where the camera lingers quietly, allowing tension to build naturally. The story focuses on a father grappling with the shocking accusation that his child may be involved in a murder. It is slow, tragic, and intense, yet it connected strongly with viewers.
While Damon acknowledged that shows like Adolescence may be the exception rather than the rule, Affleck argued that its success proves audiences are still willing to engage deeply when the storytelling is strong. He suggested that filmmakers do not always need to rely on constant stimulation or repeated explanations to hold attention.
Together, Damon and Affleck painted a clear picture of a changing industry. Streaming platforms like Netflix are adapting to how people actually watch content, even if that means rethinking long standing storytelling traditions. At the same time, their discussion highlighted that there is still room for bold and restrained filmmaking when creators are allowed to take risks.
