Jim Nantz and JJ Watt have publicly questioned the Kansas City Chiefs' decision to sign former Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker, whose career has been overshadowed by sexual misconduct allegations.
The CBS Sports commentators addressed the controversy during the Chiefs' game against the Denver Broncos on Sunday, November 1. Their discussion followed a 45-yard field goal by Kansas City kicker Harrison Butker in the second quarter.
Nantz, 67, reminded viewers that Tucker had served a 10-game suspension last season for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy. He noted that the decision to bring the veteran kicker into the organization had attracted significant criticism in Kansas City and across the NFL.
Watt, 37, agreed, pointing out that head coach Andy Reid and the Chiefs organization had spent a considerable portion of their recent press conference responding to questions about the signing.
The Chiefs signed Tucker, 36, to their practice squad on Wednesday, October 28, as Butker continued struggling with his performance this season. Tucker, a seven-time Pro Bowler, had not played in the NFL since 2024.
His suspension followed an NFL investigation into allegations made by 16 women, who accused him of exposing himself and engaging in inappropriate behaviour at several Baltimore-area spas between 2012 and 2016. The allegations were first reported by The Baltimore Banner in February 2025. Two of the establishments reportedly banned Tucker from returning.
The league subsequently determined that Tucker had violated its personal conduct policy, resulting in the 10-game suspension without pay.
The Chiefs' decision to sign the player has attracted widespread backlash, placing Reid under pressure to explain the organization's reasoning.
Speaking to reporters last week, Reid said Tucker had completed his suspension and addressed the consequences of the allegations. He also explained that the organization had conducted its own investigations before making the decision.
Reid maintained that the Chiefs had spoken to several people and made efforts to establish whether bringing Tucker into the team was appropriate.
The coach also pointed to the time that had passed since the allegations and Tucker's completed suspension, saying the organization had considered what had happened since then.
The signing adds to Reid's history of giving players opportunities to return to professional football following off-field controversies, including wide receiver Rashee Rice and punter Matt Araiza, whose rape allegations were dropped.
