Like Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni, Rwanda's Paul Kagame now has a son in the military who is following in his footsteps.

Kagame's son, Ian, graduated on Friday from the United Kingdom's Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

Ian, the third of four children, will take up the rank of Second Lieutenant in the Rwandan Defence Force (RDF).

In a statement, the RDF revealed that Ian was one of three nationals who attended the prestigious academy.

"Ian Kagame, Park Udahemuka and David Nsengiyumva graduated and were commissioned to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant at a ceremony at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst UK," the RDF said.

The president and his wife, Jeannette Kagame, attended the graduation ceremony, the presidency said in a tweet.

Ian is the second child of the Kagames to attend a military academy. Their firstborn, Ivan Cyomoro Kagame, attended West Point Military Academy in the United States, but dropped out in 2010.

When Ian enrolled, Museveni's son, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, tipped him to be a great soldier one day.

He said:

You were always strong, even as a young child. I remember you fighting your father [Paul Kagame] and me. Focus on the course alone and you will make it. I am proud of you.

Kainerugaba, widely seen as his father's heir, is also a graduate of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

An active Twitter user, he takes pride in being a soldier, as commander of the land forces of the Uganda People's Defence Force, and also as a presidential advisor to his father.
