Severe rainfall has led to widespread flooding in Spain's Costa del Sol region, forcing thousands to evacuate their homes. The Spanish meteorological agency Aemet placed both the Málaga area and parts of Catalonia on red alert due to a weather phenomenon known as a "Dana," which brings prolonged heavy rain and low temperatures.
On November 10, rain began to pour in Málaga, affecting popular tourist destinations like Marbella, Velez, and Estepona. Around 3,000 residents near the Guadalhorce River were evacuated as a precautionary measure. In addition to local efforts, the Andalusian government has coordinated with state forces for support.
Schools in Málaga have been closed, and many businesses have temporarily shuttered. Videos circulating on social media show city streets submerged in water, making typical daily activities nearly impossible. Meanwhile, the opening match of the Billie Jean King Cup in Málaga was postponed due to the weather.
Spain's Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organization, Celeste Saulo, pointed to these floods as a warning about climate change's potential to intensify weather patterns. As heavy rains continue to batter the region, citizens are urged to remain vigilant, with forecasters warning that conditions may not improve until the end of the week.
