This Thursday the New York Mets fans greatest fear seems likely to be confirmed as their closer and one of their biggest stars, Edwin Diaz, will almost certainly miss the 2023 season with a patellar tendon tear in his right knee during Puerto Rico's celebration of the victory over Dominican Republic, in what was a win or go home game in the World Baseball Classic.

The New York Mets announced Edwin Diaz will undergo surgery
Edwin Diaz will undergo surgery to repair his right knee patellar tendon, as the New York Mets general manager, Billy Eppler explained this Thursday.

The Mets entirety of infield starters is still playing in the World Baseball Classic and Keppler said it's difficult for Major League Baseball teams to file objections over their players attending the competition.

"In general, we are not given too many opportunities to stand in the way when a player goes. There are certain criteria that has to be met for a player to not go. When we're given that runway, we've taken it. We took it with Marte. We filed the objection on Marte because we could. But I don't want to get into the specifics here," he told the Washington Post.

The New York Mets owner showed his support for Edwin Diaz
Steven Cohen, the billionaire owner of the New York Mets tweeted out his support for Edwin Diaz, adding he's a fierce competitor and a great human being.
