Microsoft's latest wave of layoffs has sent shockwaves through the gaming industry, leaving thousands of employees uncertain about the future of Xbox and its network of development studios.

Approximately 3,200 jobs are expected to be eliminated, representing about 20 percent of the company's gaming workforce. The decision follows a strategic shift under Xbox's new leadership, which aims to focus resources on the company's most successful franchises.

For many employees, the cuts were both unexpected and devastating.

Morgan Goin, a senior encounter designer who worked on The Elder Scrolls Online, said staff members knew some form of restructuring was coming. However, few anticipated the scale of the reductions.

Workers describe weeks of uncertainty following an internal memo from Xbox executive Asha Sharma outlining plans to "reset the business." Employees reportedly received little information before learning that thousands of positions would disappear.

At id Software, known for franchises such as Doom, Wolfenstein and Quake, former producer Andrew Willis said nearly half the studio's workforce was affected. He expressed concern about the loss of highly specialized talent that took years to develop.

Similar concerns have emerged at ZeniMax Online Studios, where developers fear the cuts could slow future content updates for The Elder Scrolls Online, a game dependent on regular expansions to maintain player engagement.

Xbox leadership maintains that the restructuring is necessary to accelerate development of blockbuster titles and improve efficiency. The company believes concentrating resources on major franchises will deliver stronger results and satisfy long-standing demands from fans.

Industry analysts acknowledge the logic behind focusing on proven successes but caution that innovation often depends on experienced teams and creative freedom.

As Xbox moves forward with its new strategy, the company faces a delicate bal
