New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani captured global attention this week after attending Eid al Adha prayers in the Bronx wearing a custom Arsenal themed kurta. The outfit, inspired by Arsenal’s 2025 to 2026 navy and red lightning bolt away kit, quickly went viral online as football fans and social media users celebrated the unique blend of culture, religion, and football fandom.

Mamdani, who became New York’s first Muslim and Asian American mayor after his election in November, has never hidden his deep love for Arsenal Football Club. The 34 year old politician was born and raised in Uganda and has often spoken publicly about his lifelong support for the North London club. According to Mamdani, his Arsenal journey began when he was just 10 years old after his uncle gifted him fridge magnets featuring legendary Arsenal players such as Thierry Henry, David Seaman, Sol Campbell, and Sylvain Wiltord.

For many football fans, Mamdani’s kurta represented more than just fashion. It was a symbol of how football culture continues to connect people across continents, religions, and communities. The images of the mayor dressed in the Arsenal inspired attire during Eid celebrations spread rapidly online, with many supporters praising his confidence in expressing both his cultural identity and his love for football.

Although Mamdani now leads one of the world’s most influential cities, his passion for Arsenal mirrors the excitement of ordinary supporters in Highbury and Islington whenever the club achieves success. His connection to football also goes far beyond the Premier League giants. Over the years, his social media followers have admired his impressive knowledge of classic footballers from the 1990s and early 2000s, something that has earned him respect among football lovers online.

Mamdani is also a shareholder in Spanish football club Real Oviedo. He joined thousands of supporters in 2012 when the club launched an international share buying campaign while facing financial collapse. More than 20,000 people from around the world participated in an effort to save the historic Spanish side from bankruptcy, with Mamdani among those who contributed.

The New York mayor has also recently been vocal about issues surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup, particularly the use of dynamic pricing for tournament tickets. In response, Mamdani announced a lottery system that would give 1,000 New York residents the opportunity to purchase tickets for just 50 dollars. Interest in the lottery was massive, with the daily limit of 50,000 entries reportedly reached within only three minutes on the opening day.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup final is scheduled to take place at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, home to the New York Jets and New York Giants, as the tournament prepares to unfold across the United States, Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19.

Mamdani’s Arsenal inspired Eid appearance has once again shown how football continues to shape identity and culture in unexpected ways. By combining faith, fashion, and football in one memorable moment, the mayor created an image that resonated with fans around the world and sparked conversations far beyond New York City.
