Mariska Hargitay was among the many New York Knicks supporters celebrating after the team's Game 1 victory in the NBA Finals. Unlike most fans, however, she was able to personally congratulate one of the stars responsible for the win.
Speaking with ESPN's Malika Andrews on June 4, Knicks point guard Jalen Brunson revealed that Hargitay reached out to him following New York's 105-95 victory over the San Antonio Spurs.
Brunson said the actress sent a simple message congratulating him and the team on the result. While appreciative of the gesture, the 29-year-old remained focused on the task ahead, noting that the win was important but that the team needed to quickly turn its attention to the next game.
The Knicks entered the Finals opener as underdogs on the road but produced an impressive comeback. After trailing by 14 points during the second half, New York rallied to secure the victory. A key factor in the turnaround was the team's ability to limit the influence of Spurs star Victor Wembanyama, helping them seize control late in the contest.
As the series moves to Game 2, Brunson and fellow Knicks stars, including Mikal Bridges, Josh Hart, Karl-Anthony Towns and Mitchell Robinson, will be hoping to build on that momentum.
Brunson's connection with Hargitay has become a popular talking point among Knicks fans. During an appearance on the podcast Roommates Show with Jalen Brunson & Josh Hart last year, actor and longtime Knicks supporter Ben Stiller asked Brunson about his relationship with the star of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
Brunson explained that his father, Rick Brunson, frequently watched the show when he was growing up. The series became a constant presence in their household, and over time Brunson found himself becoming a fan as well. He said that as he got older, he realized he had seen countless episodes and developed a strong appreciation for the long-running drama.
The admiration eventually led to a friendship. Hargitay has often been seen courtside at Madison Square Garden, and she and Brunson have become known for sharing postgame embraces after Knicks victories.
Reflecting on their first meeting, Brunson admitted it was one of the rare occasions when he felt genuinely starstruck. He recalled being surprised and excited to meet the actress, adding that their initial conversation was memorable and helped establish the bond they continue to share today.
