For Rosie O'Donnell, a single prison visit carried the weight of decades.

The comedian, 64, published a new poem on Substack on June 12 detailing a recent visit to see her daughter Chelsea O'Donnell, 28, who has been serving time after violating the terms of her probation following a series of arrests last year. In the piece, O'Donnell described preparing herself emotionally for the encounter, writing that she knew it would be "difficult" but felt it was something she had to do, especially since her daughter had specifically asked her to come.

O'Donnell recalled warning Chelsea that she might cry upon seeing her in prison attire, only for her daughter to reassure her that things weren't as bad as she feared, telling her she'd made friends inside. When the moment finally came, O'Donnell wrote that her heart skipped a beat as Chelsea walked out looking healthy and calm, and the two shared a tight embrace.

The visit stirred complicated emotions for O'Donnell, who described stepping away afterward to compose herself. "I go splash cold water on my face as tears drop from my eyes," she wrote, adding that despite the sadness of the circumstances, all she could see when looking at her daughter, who turns 29 this summer, was the image of her as a baby.

Throughout the poem, O'Donnell expressed gratitude that the experience has brought her and Chelsea closer, noting that her daughter calls daily and appears to be handling incarceration better than expected. She wrote of looking forward to Chelsea's release and the prospect of her building a sober life afterward.

The visit was reportedly cut short by a tornado warning in the area, though O'Donnell described the day overall as significant for both of them, framing it as a testament to the unconditional bond between a parent and child. She shared the poem on Instagram alongside a photo of the two together.

Chelsea, whom O'Donnell adopted with ex-wife Kelli Carpenter in 1997, faced multiple arrests in 2024 on charges including drug possession and resisting an officer before ultimately pleading guilty to several counts. O'Donnell has spoken candidly about her daughter's struggles with addiction in the past, previously sharing childhood photos and asking for prayers as Chelsea confronted what she called a "scary future."

According to the poem, Chelsea's four children have not yet visited her in prison, something O'Donnell acknowledged causes her daughter pain.
