Anne Hathaway is reflecting on how she chose to take control of her pregnancy announcements and share the news on her own terms after being photographed in public.
The Odyssey actress, 43, who recently revealed she is expecting her third child with husband Adam Shulman, spoke to PEOPLE in April while featured on the World's Most Beautiful cover. During the conversation, she looked back on how she handled her previous two pregnancy announcements.
Hathaway explained that both times, she had already been photographed in the street before she made any official statement. She recalled noticing paparazzi images circulating and realizing that speculation about her pregnancy was already beginning.
She said that in some of the photos, she felt they could easily be misinterpreted, joking that people might assume she had simply eaten a large meal. However, she reached a point where she felt it was better to address things directly rather than let assumptions grow.
The actress said she spoke with her husband, Adam Shulman, about the situation and they discussed whether social media could be a more positive way to share personal news. She explained that if public attention was already building, it felt more meaningful to communicate the news herself rather than have it shaped by outside speculation.
Hathaway said that decision marked an important moment for her in understanding how she could use social media to take ownership of her own story. She described it as a positive and empowering experience.
The Oscar winner, who is already mother to sons Jonathan, 10, and Jack, 6, also reflected on how grateful she feels about motherhood. She said she recognizes that not everyone who wants to become a parent is able to, and she considers herself very fortunate to have had that experience.
She added that looking back on her journey made her emotional, especially realizing that both of her previous pregnancies went smoothly and brought her great joy.
Hathaway officially announced her current pregnancy on Instagram earlier this month with a short video. In the clip, she wore a flowing white dress and walked into frame before revealing her baby bump while the song "Baby I'm Yours" played. She smiled, held her stomach, and then ran out of frame, captioning the post with a simple message celebrating the news.
In earlier interviews, Hathaway has also spoken about how becoming a mother changed her sense of identity, saying it helped her feel more grounded and intentional in her life and choices.
