Former glam-rock star Gary Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, has been charged with historical sexual offences dating back to the late 1970s.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed the 82-year-old faces one count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under 13 and three counts of indecent assault on a girl under 14. The alleged offences involve a single victim and are said to have taken place between 1978 and 1981 at a residential address in Kensington, London.

The case was first reported to police on January 9, 2025, prompting an investigation. Glitter was interviewed in July 2025 and is currently being held at HMP Channings Wood in Devon. He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on August 5.

Bethan David, Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS London, said: "This follows allegations made by a woman relating to a period of alleged abuse that took place between 1978 and 1981. Our prosecutors have worked to establish that there is sufficient evidence to bring this case to court and that it is in the public interest to do so."

Glitter, once one of the UK's biggest stars of the 1970s, has a long history of convictions for child sex crimes. He was jailed in 1999 for possession of child pornography, later deported from Cambodia in 2002, and convicted in Vietnam in 2006 for obscene acts with two girls aged 10 and 11.

In 2015, he was sentenced to 16 years in prison for sexually abusing three schoolgirls between 1975 and 1980. He was briefly released on licence in 2023 but recalled weeks later for breaching conditions.

Police say the alleged victim in the latest case is being supported by specialist officers. Proceedings are now active, and Glitter has the right to a fair trial.
