Donald Trump Jr. was among those in attendance at a Utah courtroom on Monday, July 6, as proceedings began in the case against Tyler Robinson, who is accused of fatally shooting conservative political activist Charlie Kirk.

According to the Associated Press, Trump Jr., the eldest son of United States President Donald Trump, attended the opening day of Robinson's preliminary hearing, which is expected to span several days.

Robinson appeared in court to face proceedings that will determine whether prosecutors have presented enough evidence for the case to move forward to trial. He faces multiple felony charges, including aggravated murder, in connection with Kirk's death.

Kirk was shot and killed on September 10, 2025, while addressing a political rally at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. The incident sent shockwaves through conservative political circles and prompted a large-scale search for the suspect.

Authorities arrested Robinson following a multi-day manhunt after investigators said members of his own family became suspicious and alerted law enforcement. He has since remained in custody as the criminal case proceeds through the courts.

Several members of both families attended Monday's hearing. Kirk's widow, Erika, and his parents were present in court, as were Robinson's parents.

Before the hearing began, the Kirk family released a statement describing the emotional toll of the ongoing legal proceedings.

"Every court proceeding serves as a painful reminder of his death and the loss that has irrevocably impacted our lives and the lives of his children," the family said. They also expressed gratitude for the support they have received since Kirk's death, saying the prayers and kindness shown by others had helped sustain them through an immensely difficult period.

Kirk co-founded Turning Point USA in 2012 and became one of the most recognizable conservative activists in the United States. Following his death, Erika Kirk assumed the role of chief executive officer of the organization, continuing the work her husband helped establish.

During the weeklong preliminary hearing, prosecutors are expected to outline the evidence they intend to rely on as they seek to move the case to trial. The court will determine whether there is sufficient evidence to proceed, while Robinson remains presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
