Charles Barkley wasn't about to trade his golf clubs for a tuxedo, and he made that crystal clear while explaining why he snubbed Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's star-studded wedding. The NBA Hall of Famer confirmed he received an invitation to the July 3 nuptials at Madison Square Garden but turned it down flat, branding the whole affair a potential "crap show" before it even happened.
"I don't go to weddings or funerals," Barkley told Philadelphia's 97.5 The Fanatic, and he didn't dress up the reasoning one bit. He added that he loves Travis and his brother Jason, and that he's only met Taylor once, but the scale of the event was simply too much for him.
"I just want to hang out and play golf, and I don't want to dress up and all that other stuff," Barkley explained, though he insisted he appreciated the gesture and called it pretty special. His blunt take came up while he was breaking down the 76ers' blockbuster trade for Jaylen Brown.
Roughly 1,100 guests packed the arena for the celebrity wedding of the year, and A-listers including Steven Spielberg and Julia Roberts reportedly turned out for the occasion. The couple had scrapped an earlier plan to marry in Rhode Island and pivoted to New York City just months before the big day.
Barkley wasn't alone in skipping the festivities, and reports indicate roughly half of Kelce's own Kansas City Chiefs locker room passed on the invite too. Podcaster and former NFL player Will Compton admitted he never got a call at all, saying he was flabbergasted by the snub.
Swifties didn't take kindly to Barkley's "crap show" remark, and social media lit up with backlash almost instantly. One fan fired back that it was rude and disrespectful for no reason, while another said the comment wasn't the flex Barkley seemed to think it was.
Insiders also dished dirt on the reception itself, and multiple sources described a chaotic buffet setup that had A-list guests standing in line for food. One insider told the Daily Mail they couldn't believe there was a buffet at the wedding of the year, calling the whole scene tacky, and another simply labeled it "a bit of a s--t show."
