With Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves receiving positive reviews but underperforming at the box office, the future of a potential sequel remains uncertain. Despite an enthusiastic audience response, the film failed to recoup its significant budget in theaters, prompting Paramount to consider a sequel only if made on a much lower budget. However, the movie’s success on streaming platforms has ignited discussions around a more promising option: a live-action TV series.

Television offers an ideal platform for the Dungeons & Dragons universe. Unlike films, TV series provide ample time to develop characters and flesh out the rich lore of D&D's expansive settings, a feat Honor Among Thieves only began to explore. Fantasy series like Game of Thrones or The Witcher have thrived on long-form storytelling, and a D&D show could follow a similar path, showcasing different adventures, locations, and characters within the game’s varied worlds, such as the Forgotten Realms. With enough episodes, a live-action series could introduce iconic game elements that were left out of the film, like beloved characters and monsters, keeping both veteran fans and newcomers engaged.

Moreover, streaming platforms like Netflix and Paramount+ have proven that a D&D audience exists, with Honor Among Thieves performing remarkably well on those services. This success demonstrates that viewers are still eager to dive into the Dungeons & Dragons world, even if a theatrical franchise is no longer feasible. Despite the recent cancellation of an early live-action series attempt by Paramount, Hasbro remains determined to shop the project around, confident in the potential of a show to reach a wider audience.

A live-action TV series would also allow for a more complex, darker tone, appealing to modern fantasy audiences. Gritty storytelling, intricate character arcs, and immersive world-building are the hallmarks of today’s most successful fantasy shows, and a D&D series could easily tap into this trend. The darker, more intense side of the Dungeons & Dragons lore, including complex character dilemmas and morally ambiguous quests, could be explored, differentiating the show from the lighter tone of Honor Among Thieves.

Ultimately, while a sequel to Honor Among Thieves might still be possible, a live-action TV series is far more suited to the vast, sprawling world of Dungeons & Dragons. With the flexibility of episodic storytelling and the ability to develop new narrative arcs and character relationships, a series offers an opportunity to truly do justice to the magic and depth of the D&D universe.
