Director Guy Ritchie is set to direct Road House 2, the follow-up to Amazon MGM Studios’ breakout remake of the 1989 cult classic. Jake Gyllenhaal returns to reprise bouncer-turned-boxer Elwood Dalton’s explosive presence from the original movie. The follow-up tells the unlikely success story of a movie that courted controversy but went on to smash streaming records.
Doug Liman’s 2024 Road House remake had the highest-watched Amazon original movie debut, drawing close to 80 million viewers globally in its first month on Prime Video. Despite being a success, Liman criticized Amazon for bypassing a theatrical release, describing it as diminishing the filmmakers and cinematic experience. His very public departure left the sequel lacking a director—before Ritchie jumped into the fray.
Ritchie, whose stylized crime dramas like Snatch and The Gentlemen have been a signature of his work, has collaborated with Gyllenhaal previously on The Covenant. That chemistry paired with Ritchie’s skill for gritty action and snappy dialogue makes him a suitable choice for the high-octane sequel.
Road House 2 storyline remains under wraps, but the original movie left the door wide open. Dalton closed out the chaos in the Florida Keys, but there was a mid-credits scene that left Conor McGregor’s character, Knox, standing. McGregor’s return or not is to be determined, though fan speculation is growing.
Gyllenhaal, who also serves as a producer, confirmed his involvement in the sequel and teased that the film would be “even more expansive” than the first. “We’re going big,” he said in a recent interview. “More action, more heart, and yes, more bar fights.”
Will Beall, with credits including Aquaman and Bad Boys: Ride or Die, is penning the script. With Ritchie at the helm, Beall’s script, and Gyllenhaal back in the lead, Amazon seems set on bringing Road House to full-fledged franchise status.
No release date has been scheduled, but filming is set for later this year. With Ritchie’s personal stamp and Gyllenhaal’s A-list status, Road House 2 might push the rebooted series into a legitimate action brand—streaming or otherwise.
