Universal Pictures has officially unveiled the first trailer for Shrek 5, giving fans a long awaited glimpse into the return of one of animation’s most beloved franchises. The film is set to hit theaters on June 30, 2027, marking the first main installment in the series in 17 years since Shrek Forever After was released in 2010.
The trailer reunites the iconic trio of Shrek, Fiona and Donkey as they embark on another magical adventure through the land of Far Far Away. Mike Myers returns as the voice of Shrek, Eddie Murphy reprises his role as Donkey and Cameron Diaz is back as Fiona. Joining the cast are Zendaya, Saturday Night Live comedian Marcello Hernandez and Skyler Gisondo, who voice Shrek and Fiona’s now grown children Felicia, Fergus and Farkle.
The preview opens with a familiar storybook narration that revisits the original tale of Shrek, Fiona and Donkey from the first film released in 2001. However, Donkey quickly interrupts the narration and declares that it is time for a makeover, hinting at the refreshed animation style that viewers will notice throughout the new movie.
As the trailer unfolds, the characters travel across the magical kingdom of Far Far Away where they encounter a giant, members of law enforcement and an unusual snowman character that parodies Olaf from Frozen. The strange snowman appears in a dark alley and asks, “You wanna date a snowman?” adding another dose of the quirky humor that has defined the franchise for years.
Fans are also treated to the return of Gingy, the gingerbread man, who appears with two gumdrop buttons attached to his backside and proudly jokes that he is “caked up like a friggin bakery.” The playful moment is one of several comedic scenes featured in the trailer.
The preview ends with Shrek, Fiona, their children and Donkey trapped inside a jail cell. As everyone waits for a way out, Donkey entertains himself by singing Baby Come Back and Roxanne, much to Shrek’s visible annoyance, closing the trailer on a humorous note.
Shrek 5 represents the return of a franchise that has remained popular for decades. While the series has seen two successful spinoffs with Puss in Boots in 2011 and Puss in Boots The Last Wish in 2022, this latest installment finally brings audiences back to the adventures of Shrek and his family. The first trailer promises a mix of nostalgia, fresh characters and the signature comedy that made the original films global favorites.
