Elon Musk has responded with sarcasm after Republican candidates suffered significant defeats in the 2026 midterm elections, despite the billionaire entrepreneur investing more than $474 million in efforts to secure victories for the party.

Musk, 55, took to X on Wednesday, November 4, following a series of Democratic wins across the country, including major victories in Texas, where Republicans had maintained political dominance for decades.

"Guess my election-interfering space lasers didn't work this time," Musk wrote in a post, appearing to mock the outcome of the elections.

Just moments earlier, the Tesla and SpaceX chief executive had also joked about relocating his data centers beyond Earth, writing, "Data centers in space looking pretty appealing right now."

The remarks followed Democratic victories in Texas, where James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton in the Senate race, while Gina Hinojosa secured the governorship against incumbent Greg Abbott. Democrats also won several other statewide positions, marking a major political shift in the traditionally Republican state.

According to campaign finance records analyzed by CNBC, Musk spent approximately $474 million supporting Republican candidates and political groups during the election cycle. Nearly half of that amount, around $224 million, went toward Texas races.

The entrepreneur had hoped to help Republicans maintain their longstanding control of the state, particularly backing Abbott, Paxton and Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick.

Talarico, who secured approximately 55% of the vote, addressed wealthy political donors during his victory speech, saying the results sent a message to billionaires seeking to influence the political system.

Musk's political spending marked a renewed involvement in Republican politics after he stepped back following a public disagreement with President Donald Trump.

The two later appeared to repair their relationship, attending Charlie Kirk's memorial service in September 2025 and traveling together to China during Trump's state visit in May.

In July, Trump's senior political adviser James Blair described Musk's political operation as an essential partner, saying it would provide a significant boost to Republicans during the midterms.

Blair had also expressed confidence that the party would outmaneuver its opponents and execute its political strategy ahead of Election Day.

However, the election results represented a major setback for Musk and the Republicans, raising questions about the influence of massive political donations on voter decisions.
