The South African government swiftly dismissed his comments, stating that land reform in the country remains a legal and constitutional process aimed at addressing historical injustices stemming from the apartheid era.
South Africa's land reform policies are rooted in the country's history of racial discrimination, where Black and non-White South Africans were forcibly removed from their land under apartheid. Since the nation's first democratic elections in 1994, efforts have been underway to redistribute land more equitably. However, progress has been slow, and economic disparities persist, with a large portion of land still owned by a small White minority.
To accelerate land redistribution, Ramaphosa recently signed a bill that outlines guidelines for land expropriation, allowing the government to take land without compensation in specific circumstances. Following Trump's warning about cutting aid, Ramaphosa stated that U.S. financial support to South Africa was not as significant as implied, apart from contributions to major health initiatives like the fight against HIV/AIDS. He emphasized that South Africa remains committed to the principles of justice, fairness, and the rule of law.
