"I was deeply honored to welcome the @WeAreInvictus team to Ghana just before my 100th birthday!" Hammond posted. "Receiving the Invictus Medal Coin from #PrinceHarry was a true privilege."
In return, Hammond gifted Prince Harry a copy of his memoir, acknowledging the prince's continued support for veterans' causes.
The two first connected in 2019 during a royal event recognizing veterans from the Commonwealth. Hammond, who served as a mechanic in Burma (now Myanmar) during WWII, fought alongside British forces.
Speaking of that encounter, Hammond recalled, "I immediately felt drawn to Prince Harry—he's a soldier like me. We spoke about our time in the military and my battalion. It was a great exchange."
In 2020, Hammond undertook a demanding 14-mile walk to raise funds for frontline workers amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Prince Harry later wrote him a letter praising his dedication.
"At 95, that walk must not have been easy," Harry wrote. "But considering your lifetime of service and selflessness, I wasn't surprised you accepted the challenge—and even wanted to go further. As you said, it's truly amazing."
The Duke also extended heartfelt wishes from both himself and Meghan Markle, reflecting on their meeting the previous year.
"It was a joy and an honor to meet you at the Field of Remembrance in London," he said. "You set a remarkable example for the world."
Meanwhile, the British royal family has been actively participating in events marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day, which celebrates the end of World War II in Europe.
On Monday, May 5, King Charles, Queen Camilla, Prince William, Kate Middleton, and their children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—joined other senior royals for a military parade and an aerial display to begin the commemorations.
Prince George experienced a royal milestone of his own, attending his first tea party for World War II veterans at Buckingham Palace.
As second in line to the throne, George accompanied his father and mirrored his actions throughout the event, sitting beside him and joining both his parents in showing appreciation to the veterans.
A source previously told PEOPLE that Prince William and Kate are thoughtfully balancing Prince George's royal responsibilities with a normal upbringing.
"They're doing a great job allowing him to enjoy childhood while slowly introducing him to royal duties," the insider said. "He's learning both what it means to be a future monarch and what it's like to just be a regular kid."
