Brazil has entered a new chapter of political reckoning as the Supreme Court ordered former president Jair Bolsonaro to begin serving a prison sentence of 27 years and three months. The ruling, delivered by Justice Alexandre de Moraes, concluded that no further appeals were possible and that Bolsonaro must now be incarcerated in a federal police facility in Brasília. His conviction centers on orchestrating a conspiracy to overturn the results of the 2022 election, which he lost to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The court determined that Bolsonaro was the driving force behind efforts to remain in power, including plans involving senior military figures and attempts to undermine public confidence in democratic institutions.

Bolsonaro was detained after being deemed a flight risk, with court documents revealing that he attempted to tamper with his ankle monitor using a soldering iron before abandoning the idea. He attributed the incident to paranoia triggered by medication. Justice Moraes has mandated continuous medical care due to Bolsonaro's health concerns, adding another layer of complexity to the unfolding political drama. The Supreme Court's earlier findings in September detailed that Bolsonaro was aware of plots to assassinate President Lula and Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and execute Justice Moraes. These revelations underscored the severity of the conspiracy and shaped the court's ruling that Bolsonaro should be barred from public office until 2060.

The fallout from Bolsonaro's actions extended beyond the courtroom. On 8 January 2023, thousands of his supporters stormed key government buildings in Brasília, actions the court found were encouraged by Bolsonaro with the expectation that military forces would intervene on his behalf. Instead, security services restored order and detained roughly 1500 people. Bolsonaro has dismissed the proceedings as a political witch hunt designed to keep him out of the 2026 presidential race, but the Supreme Court has remained firm in its judgment.

Justice Moraes has also ordered that other collaborators begin serving their sentences, including former high ranking military officials. As the nation absorbs the implications of the ruling, Brazil faces the challenge of strengthening democratic norms while confronting the legacy of a deeply polarizing political era.
