Members of Iran's women's national soccer team remained silent during their country's national anthem before their opening match at the AFC Women's Asian Cup, in what appeared to be a protest amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Ahead of their game against South Korea on Monday, March 2, at Gold Coast Stadium in Queensland, Australia, the players stood together on the pitch as the anthem played but did not sing along. Video footage from the moment shows the team maintaining silence in a gesture that many interpreted as a response to the ongoing conflict affecting their home country.
Iran went on to lose the match 3-0. Despite the result, their actions drew admiration from fellow athletes and commentators who praised their composure and courage during a difficult period.
Australia midfielder Amy Sayer expressed sympathy for the Iranian players and their families. Speaking to The Guardian, she said her heart went out to them and described the situation as challenging. Sayer commended the team for competing under intense political pressure and acknowledged the personal struggles they might be facing. She added that the Australian team's role was to show respect on the field and deliver their best performance, while hoping that conditions improve and the Iranian players remain safe during their time in Australia.
Australian television host Caleb Bond also voiced support for the team. Speaking on Sky News Australia, he applauded their decision, noting the risks faced by women living under Iran's leadership. He suggested that appearing on a global stage and choosing not to participate in singing the anthem was a powerful statement.
The match took place as violence continues in the region. Reports from NBC News, Al Jazeera and The Wall Street Journal indicate that approximately 800 people have died in the early stages of the conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran, with most casualties reported in Iran.
Iran is the only Middle Eastern nation competing in this year's Asian Cup tournament. The team is scheduled to face host nation Australia on Thursday, March 5, before concluding the group stage against the Philippines on Sunday, March 8.
