Teddi Mellencamp is recovering from a frightening illness.
The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star recently revealed that she was hospitalized after contracting Stevens-Johnson syndrome, a rare and serious skin and mucous membrane ailment.
"I hadn't felt good for a couple days," Teddi told her friend and cohost Tamra Judge on the March 3 episode of Two Ts in a Pod. "I thought I had the flu, and then I woke up one
day, and my whole body was just covered in this terrible rash—you can't even say it's a rash because they're almost like sores, like, all over my entire body."
Teddi, who said that the sores "hurt and burned," remained cool despite the scary situation and went to urgent care, believing it would be a simple repair. However, her doctor advised her to go to the emergency room right away.
"Essentially what happened was I was given a new medication, and I was allergic to it," she said of what caused the condition, which she defined as "a rare life-threatening medical emergency causing severe, painful blisters of the skin and mucous membranes."
Teddi, who has children Slate, 12, Cruz, 11, and Dove, 6, with ex Edwin Arroyave, stated, "It was everywhere."
“It went into my mouth,” she recalled. “Around my eyes a little bit. I couldn’t swallow.”
While the hospital's doctors were able to rapidly diagnose and treat Teddi's sickness, she needed to be admitted.
"They immediately started me on steroids and antibiotics and then after a couple days, it thankfully got better," according to her. "The reason they were like 'You need to stay in,' is that it can start to get better and then shift right back up."
Fortunately, Teddi was able to be discharged in time to attend her youngest's birthday party, noting, "I wasn't feeling great, but just the adrenaline from seeing her."
As she expressed it, "I was so happy."
