Uncertainty is growing around the future of Edu Gaspar at Nottingham Forest after the club’s global head of football was reportedly asked to stay away from the training ground while scrutiny of his role intensifies. The development comes during a difficult campaign for the club, which is currently fighting to remain in the Premier League.

According to reports, the 47 year old executive has not been present at the club’s last three matches. Those fixtures came against Fenerbahce, Brighton and Hove Albion and Manchester City. His absence has fueled speculation about his position at the City Ground as the club battles to avoid relegation.

Forest currently sit 17th in the Premier League standings and are level on points with West Ham United. The club remains outside the relegation zone only because of goal difference, highlighting just how precarious their situation has become as the season approaches its final weeks.

Despite the speculation, the club has declined to make an official comment on the situation. Sources close to Nottingham Forest insist that Edu continues to perform his duties as normal, even though questions about his future have grown louder in recent days.

The pressure surrounding Edu is closely linked to the club’s disappointing season. Forest began the campaign under the management of Nuno Espirito Santo, but managerial instability has been a major theme throughout the season. The team is now working under its fourth manager of the campaign, Vitor Pereira.

Nuno was dismissed earlier in the season after a breakdown in his relationship with Edu. Reports suggest that similar tensions also affected the tenures of Ange

Postecoglou and Sean Dyche, who both left the role during a turbulent period for the club.

Pereira was appointed with the task of stabilizing the team and guiding Nottingham Forest to Premier League survival. However the early results have not provided much relief. Since taking charge last month Pereira has yet to secure a league victory, adding to the pressure already surrounding the club’s leadership structure.

Another major point of concern internally has been the club’s recruitment strategy. Since the summer transfer window Nottingham Forest have spent close to £200 million on new players. As global head of football, Edu has played a central role in overseeing that recruitment drive.

Given the club’s current league position, some figures inside the club are understood to have concerns about the effectiveness of that strategy. The significant investment has yet to translate into consistent results on the pitch, which has contributed to the increased scrutiny of Edu’s performance.

Sources have indicated in recent days that Edu could leave Nottingham Forest before the start of next season. However the club strongly disputes those claims and maintains that there has been no decision made about his future.

Even so, with Nottingham Forest fighting to remain in the Premier League and the season nearing its conclusion, the spotlight on Edu’s role within the club is unlikely to fade any time soon. The coming weeks could prove crucial both for the club’s survival hopes and for the future of one of its most senior football executives.
