The Chicago Sky made the most of their two first-round picks in the WNBA Draft, selecting Kamilla Cardoso, a center from South Carolina, and Angel Reese, a forward from LSU. Chicago fans, teams, and city officials enthusiastically welcomed the new additions.
Cardoso, standing tall at 6-foot-7, was chosen with the No. 3 overall pick after an outstanding career at South Carolina, where she contributed significantly to the Gamecocks' undefeated national championship victory. Averaging 14.4 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game in her final collegiate season, Cardoso showcased her versatility and dominance as a center.
The Sky acquired the No. 3 pick from the Phoenix Mercury by trading Kahleah Copper and Morgan Bertsch. Additionally, they secured the No. 7 pick from the Minnesota Lynx, using it to draft Reese, a talented forward who played a pivotal role in LSU's success, including a national title in 2023 and an Elite Eight appearance this season. Reese averaged an impressive 18.6 points and 13.4 rebounds per game, ranking second in rebounding across all of college basketball.
In the second round of the draft, the Sky selected Brynna Maxwell, a guard from Gonzaga, with the No. 13 pick. Maxwell, who transferred from Utah, proved herself as a key player for Gonzaga, averaging 14.2 points, 2.9 rebounds, and shooting an impressive 44% from three-point range. Her addition adds another dynamic threat to Chicago's perimeter game.
Maxwell marks the first player drafted by the Sky from Gonzaga since Courtney Vandersloot, who played a significant role in the team's 2021 WNBA championship victory.
The top two picks in the draft were Iowa's Caitlin Clark, selected first overall by the Indiana Fever, and Stanford's Cameron Brink, chosen second by the Los Angeles Sparks.
