Iowa State and basketball head coach T.J. Otzelberger (47) have agreed to a new contract that will extend him through June 30, 2032. Iowa State basketball was 2-22 before Otzelberger took the head coaching job in 2022 and turned it into a premiere program.
The Cyclones reached the Sweet 16 of the March Madness Tournament last season after a 29-8 record. They are currently the number three-ranked team in the country with a 9-1 record. "My family and I love Iowa State University, and the community, and are happy to continue calling it home," said Otzelberger in the news release. "Our fan base is second-to-none and we value their continued support as we continue this journey together.
The complete reimagining of our program under Coach Otzelberger's leadership is a testament to his vision and the plan that he and his staff have successfully implemented," said athletic director Jamie Pollard. "His continued emphasis on the program's daily habits has not only reshaped our program but has allowed the Cyclones to quickly pull off one of the greatest turnarounds in college basketball history."
Since becoming the head coach, Iowa State has a record of 79-36, three tournament appearances, two of which he took the Cyclones to the Sweet 16. Otzelberger has a total head coaching record of 178-99 during his time in collegiate ball. He previously coached three seasons at South Dakota State then two more at UNLV before officially becoming the head coach for Iowa State.
