Two-time All-Star guard Isaiah Thomas signed with the Utah Jazz G League affiliate team, Salt Lake City Stars, on Monday. Thomas hasn't started a game for an NBA team since he was on the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2021-2022 season.
He participated in six games with the Phoenix Suns last season, which he played for in 2014-2015, and didn't play during the 2022-2023 season because no team signed him. Thomas' career has been an interesting one. Thomas became the first player in NBA history ever taken in the final pick of the NBA Draft to be awarded the Rookie of the Month honor after averaging 12.2 points and 4.4 assists per game in February 2012.
But even more impressive - he did it twice, again in April 2012. Thomas then went on to be voted to the All-NBA Second Team at the end of the season. Fast forward to his time with the Celtics where he became a league-wide star, averaging 19.0, 22.2, and 28.9 points per game in each of the three years he was with the team, finishing fifth in MVP voting after the 2016-2017 season. Unfortunately, Thomas' career was also plagued by injuries.
After his hip injury that he sustained in his final season with Boston, missing the postseason, his career never got back to form. He averaged 15.2 points per game with the Cavaliers that following season after the Celtics traded him - which is where the career freefall began. But now, the veteran is still motivated more than ever. If the Jazz sign Thomas to an NBA contract, it will mark his 11th team in 13 seasons.
