Caitlin Clark will not return for the remainder of the Indiana Fever's season after being sidelined by a right groin injury. The 2024 Rookie of the Year shared her disappointment in a statement, saying she had been working daily with the single goal of getting back on the court. Clark admitted that "disappointed isn't a big enough word" to capture her feelings, but she thanked fans for their continued support, noting how much joy they brought her and the team despite the setbacks. She added that the Fever had grown stronger through adversity and expressed hope that they would close the season by securing a playoff spot.

Clark's injury occurred late in a July 15 game against the Connecticut Sun, where she also sustained a bone bruise. Despite the setback, she had participated in shootarounds and non-contact drills before recent games, though full recovery proved elusive. In her second WNBA season, the former Iowa star averaged 16.5 points, 8.8 assists, and 5.0 rebounds over 13 games. Fever COO and General Manager Amber Cox explained that while Clark had worked tirelessly in her recovery, there was simply not enough time left in the season for her to safely return. Cox emphasized that Clark's long-term health was the organization's top priority and said the team looked forward to having her back at full strength to begin the 2026 season.

It has been a difficult year for Clark, who also struggled with injuries to her left quad and left groin. These challenges marked the first time in her career that she has dealt with significant health issues, as she never missed a game during her college years at Iowa or in her rookie WNBA season.
Clark's absence adds to the Fever's growing list of injuries. The team has now lost five players for the season, including Sydney Colson, Aari McDonald, Sophie Cunningham, and Chloe Bibby. Despite these setbacks, Indiana currently holds the eighth spot in the standings, 1.5 games ahead of Los Angeles, with three games remaining.
Beyond her on-court performance, Clark has played a pivotal role in elevating women's basketball. Her presence has been central to the WNBA's record attendance this season, even though she missed much of the campaign. Fans and teammates alike will be looking forward to her comeback in 2026 as the Fever continue to push through a challenging season.
