The Los Angeles Sparks waived Kate Martin on Saturday, marking the second time the guard has been released by a WNBA team this season. The Golden State Valkyries also waived Martin just days before the regular season began, eventually leading her to Los Angeles.
The latest move raises questions about what comes next for Martin and whether she can secure another opportunity in the WNBA.
Earlier this week, Sparks head coach Lynne Roberts addressed Martin's limited playing time in recent games. Roberts explained that Los Angeles was using the final stretch of the season to evaluate its younger players and determine who could become part of the team's future.
According to Roberts, Martin was not receiving the same opportunities because the Sparks already had a clear understanding of what she could contribute.
If that assessment was accurate, Saturday's decision suggests that Los Angeles ultimately did not see Martin as part of its long-term plans.
Martin remains well regarded across the league, with coaches and teammates frequently praising her attitude, work ethic and ability to contribute to a team. However, positive relationships can only take a player so far in a league where roster spots are limited and teams are constantly searching for talent with greater potential.
The situation could be particularly challenging for Martin because rebuilding teams such as the Sparks are likely to prioritize younger players who have more room to develop. At 26, Martin has shown flashes of being a reliable contributor, but she has yet to establish herself as a consistent impact player over an entire WNBA season.
Her connection with Caitlin Clark could potentially help open another door. Martin and Clark were teammates at Iowa and remain close friends, making the Indiana Fever a possible destination. However, even that connection may not be enough to guarantee Martin another WNBA roster spot.
There is still reason for optimism. Martin remains signed with Unrivaled, giving her an opportunity to compete alongside some of the best players in the women's game. A strong offseason performance could help her attract interest from WNBA teams ahead of the 2027 season.
Martin was selected 18th overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft, making her a second-round pick who has already defied expectations by establishing herself in the league.
Now facing another setback, Martin will have to prove once again that she belongs. Her next opportunity could determine whether she continues her WNBA journey or begins looking elsewhere for the next chapter of her career
