couple of days ago some San Francisco Giants reporters and fans were shocked after discovering that the team they cover and root for had some merchandise using a hated nickname for the city in it.

Peter Hartlaub, a culture critic for the San Francisco Chronicle posted a photo of the t-shirt and compared it to having "Voldemort" apparel at a "Harry Potter" store.

Why do some fans hate this San Francisco Giants merch?

The shirt that has sparked criticism online has "San Fran" across the chest and many locals don't like that nickname for the city of San Francisco, even though the hatred towards the name doesn't seem to have a specific origin.

A couple of years ago, Charles Fracchia, founder of the San Francisco Historical Society said that it was of vital importance to call the city by it's name of "San Franciso" and not "San Fran".

"Utilizing the full name of any person or place gives it dignity, and I believe 'San Francisco' deserves to be referred to in its full name", the press release read.

The San Francisco Giants haven't adressed the situation

The employees at the team store referred a reporter to the San Francisco Giants PR team for inquiries, but Gabe Fernandez is stating that she didn't receive a response from the team or the Nike brand.
