BMW has announced a comprehensive global recall affecting a staggering 371,756 vehicles due to a critical fault in their integrated braking system. This extensive recall spans a diverse range of BMW’s model series, from the compact 2 Series Active Tourer and X1 to the robust SUV lines such as the X3, X4, X5, X6, and X7, and extends to the high-end 5 and 7 Series sedans, including the performance M models and electric vehicles like the iX1, i5, and i7.
The identified fault lies within the integrated braking system, which utilizes an electric actuator to maintain consistent brake pressure. This defect could necessitate increased pedal force during braking and potentially disable essential brake control functions like the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). Despite the severity of the issue, BMW has reported no incidents of accidents, property damage, or personal injuries attributed to this problem.
BMW’s sophisticated system is designed not only to ensure consistent braking but also to allow M model owners to tailor their braking characteristics for daily comfort or enhanced performance during track sessions. However, the discovered fault undermines these benefits, leading to an urgent recall.
Vehicle owners impacted by this recall are being notified through letters, with instructions to schedule a visit to their local BMW workshops for repairs. In Germany alone, nearly 47,000 vehicle owners have been contacted. The automaker has identified a potential signal disruption in the engine position sensor as the root cause, which may lead to a failure in the hydraulic brake force support. BMW has pledged to replace the integrated braking system in all affected vehicles, covering models built between 2022 and 2024.
In addition to the global recall, BMW of North America has initiated a separate recall for nearly 79,670 vehicles from its 2023 and 2024 lineup, including the Rolls-Royce Spectre. This recall was published in February 2024 and includes several models such as the 2023 and 2024 editions of the 5 and 7 Series, i5 and i7 electric, X1, X5, X6, X7, and XM. Owners are encouraged to check the NHTSA recalls website or contact BMW or Rolls Royce directly to determine if their vehicle is included in the recall and to arrange for necessary repairs.
This proactive measure by BMW underscores the company’s commitment to the safety and reliability of its vehicles. The recall, while logistically and technically challenging, demonstrates BMW’s dedication to maintaining the highest standards of customer care and vehicle performance. As the automotive industry continues to evolve with technological advancements, BMW’s swift action sets a precedent for how manufacturers should respond to potential safety issues, ensuring the well-being of their customers and the integrity of their brand.
