Chick-fil-A CEO Andrew Cathy has addressed questions about the fast-food chain's position on LGBTQ+ rights, offering a response focused on customer service rather than directly discussing the controversy surrounding the company's history.

In his first broadcast interview with NBC's TODAY, aired October 14, Cathy was questioned by host Craig Melvin about the company's stance on equal rights and criticism from people who have boycotted the chain over its past donations to organizations accused of opposing LGBTQ+ rights.

Asked about the company's approach, Cathy said, "We're focused on hospitality, serving great-tasting food, and great service."

When Melvin asked what he would say to people who had avoided the restaurant, Cathy encouraged them to visit.  "For anybody that hasn't tried us, we'd love for you to come try and have our great-tasting food and the hospitality that we're known for," he said. He added that customers would find themselves welcome at the restaurants.

When Melvin questioned whether he wanted to discuss the company's controversial past, Cathy reiterated, "We're focused on serving everybody that comes in to eat with us."
The controversy dates back to 2012, when Cathy's father, former CEO Dan Cathy, publicly expressed opposition to same-sex marriage. Public records also revealed donations to Christian organizations whose policies and positions attracted criticism from LGBTQ+ advocates.

The backlash prompted boycotts and protests. In 2019, Chick-fil-A announced changes to its charitable giving strategy, saying its donations would focus on organizations working in education, homelessness and hunger.

Despite the controversy, Andrew Cathy said his family's Christian faith continues to influence the company's principles. Explaining its corporate purpose, he said the business aims "to glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that's entrusted to us, and have a positive influence on all who come in contact with Chick-fil-A."

Cathy has served as CEO for five years and is the third member of his family to lead the business. His grandfather, S. Truett Cathy, founded the company in 1946, and Dan Cathy later succeeded him.
