Just days after reaffirming its reliance on Nvidia silicon, Meta has struck another blockbuster AI chip agreement, this time with Advanced Micro Devices, signaling that the AI infrastructure race is no longer a single-vendor contest.
The multiyear pact will see Meta deploy up to 6 gigawatts of AMD graphics processing units in its artificial intelligence data centers. Early shipments of AMD's MI450 GPUs, integrated into its Helios rack-scale systems, are expected to begin later this year.
The timing is deliberate. Only a week ago, Meta publicly committed to using millions of processors from Nvidia to fuel its AI expansion. By pairing that pledge with a massive AMD rollout, Meta is making it clear: no single chipmaker will control its AI destiny.
The structure of the agreement adds another layer of intrigue. AMD has granted Meta a performance-based warrant to purchase 160 million shares, roughly 10% of the chipmaker. Vesting is tied to deployment milestones, beginning with the shipment of the first gigawatt of Instinct GPUs and scaling through the full 6GW target. Additional conditions hinge on stock-price thresholds and technical benchmarks.
For AMD, the win is transformational. The company remains far smaller than Nvidia in AI accelerators, but landing Meta as a hyperscale customer validates its push into high-performance AI systems. Its Helios platform now stands as the first large-scale challenger to Nvidia's Grace Blackwell architecture.
For Meta, the strategy is about leverage and resilience. With plans for 30 data centers and capital expenditures projected as high as $135 billion this year, compute supply is mission-critical. Diversifying suppliers reduces allocation risk while sharpening pricing power in a market still constrained by surging AI demand.
The message to the industry is unmistakable: the AI chip wars are entering a new phase, one defined not by exclusivity, but by calculated competition.
